High Consequence Infectious Diseases

High Consequence Infectious Diseases (HCIDs) are infectious diseases that present an immediate threat, pose a high risk of death or serious long-term disability to a large number of people, and create a substantial risk of public exposure due to the disease’s high level of contagion or method by which the disease is transmitted. Although often spread initially by animals, HCID conditions also spread from person-to-person.

The HCID Team provides guidance for and coordinates surveillance and monitoring activities for HCIDs in Texas. The HCID Team also coordinates with federal partners, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, for international surveillance, specialized testing, and clinical consultations.
