In accordance with Health and Safety Code, Section 108.012(b),"the council (department) may charge a person requesting public use or provider quality data a fee for the data.  The fees may reflect the quantity of information provided and the expense incurred by the council in collecting and providing the data and shall be set at a level that will raise revenue sufficient for the operation of the council (department's program).  The council (department) may not charge a fee for providing public use data to another state agency.  Chapter 108 may be viewed by clicking  here.

The Texas Outpatient  Public Use Data File (PUDF) contains data on outpatient surgical and radiological procedures from Texas hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers.  The  PUDF has been released through third quarter 2013.  The fourth quarter 2013 is expected to be released in December 2014.  Purchasing the PUDF requires a completed Order Form and a signed Data Use Agreement.

The data files for data released include 123 data fields in a base data file, 141 data fields in a classifications data file, 13 data fields in a detailed charges file, and 27 data fields in a facility type code file. Information on the data fields is included in the Data Dictionary, 2013 and information on the facilities reporting data is included in the Reporting Status, 2013. The PUDF includes:

Second quarter, 811 facilities  Base data: 3,053,616 records Charges data: 22,010,017 records

Free Data Download

The Public Use Data File (PUDF) for 2009, in fixed-length format, is available for free download.

 

Data Purchasers

The list of organizations includes a variety of organizations that use the data for analysis.  The listing includes recipients from 2003 through December 31, 2013.  This list is updated annually.  (January 23, 2014)

Technical Update

An update has been released for “ Data Dictionary 2011”. On page 3, the third quarter 2011 outpatient charges file has 16,635,500 records instead of 16,635,400 records.
